Clean Calgary Association
We live in a society where consumption and
waste continue to rise at an exponential rate. With all the media attention
surrounding curb-side recycling, global warming and new environmental regulations,
we may need to re-evaluate what products we buy and how we live to become
more environmentally responsible.
Clean Calgary Association, a local not-for-profit organization, empowers
Calgarians to create healthy homes and communities by providing environmental
education, products and services to people of all ages. Operating as a program
of Clean Calgary, the Calgary Materials Exchange (CMEX) assists companies
to divert industrial, commercial and construction waste from going to landfills.
They deliver presentations in the workplace as well as in the home on how
you can reduce your environmental footprint in your everyday life - whether
at work or at home.
Currently, Clean Calgary is working on two new campaigns called “Dump
the Junk” and “Cell Phone Collection Program.”
In addition to a great new “No Junk Mail” sticker, the Dump
the Junk campaign is aimed at giving people information to be removed from
mailing lists to stop unsolicited addressed junk mail. This not only saves
you from filtering through hundreds of pieces of junk mail but it also helps
prevent the destruction of millions of trees.
The Cell Phone Collection Program is both a fundraiser for Clean Calgary
as well as a new initiative designed to keep hazardous household materials
out of landfills. For each cell phone that is brought in, Clean Calgary
receives $1 from PhoneBack Canada.
Earth Day is a day intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for our
planet. Although every day is Earth Day at Clean Calgary, they did make
a few suggestions on activities for families to do on this special day in
2007. For adults, on April 21, the 16th Annual Climb and Run for Wilderness,
put on by the Alberta Wilderness Association, will be taking place at the
Calgary Tower. Competitors will see how many times they can climb the 802
stairs in the tower. For children, Clean Calgary will be part of the Telus
World of Science’s Earth Day on April 22. Presentations include “Water
for Life,” “Click on Climate” and “Be an Eco-Superhero.”
According to Clean Calgary, the most effective ways for Calgarians to make
a difference in their communities is to recycle everything they can, buy
materials with recycled content, and compost. As for businesses, working
with the property management company to provide private curbside recycling
will minimize landfill waste.
What does extraordinary living mean to Clean Calgary?
Less is more. Simplifying your lifestyle and your purchases will create a happier environment for yourself and a healthier environment for the whole world.
